Readasaurus Birthday

Last Friday Jan. 30, 2009 was Readasaurus' Birthday. Readasaurus is the mascot of Jaxon's School. They were to dress like pirates or wear their PJ's. We tried to get Jax to wear his Iron Man PJ's but that was Not a pirate! So we made due with what we had available (halloween stuff is tucked away). We drew on his face and mommy even let him wear a tatoo (this does not happen to often). On the way to school Jaxon told me how pirates sometimes do bad things and aren't always nice. We talked about this for a while, I was impressed with Jaxon's thoughts on the subject.

A friend's husband, from the ward, went to the school in the morning as Captain Jack. He did this at halloween and he did a great job. Here is a link to their blog. Jaxon missed this assembly.

When he got home from school, Jaxon talked about how the Principal had to walk the plank and landed in some stuff that felt fishy. Jaxon talked a bit more about what happened at school, but sometimes half a story doesn't quite make sence. He also came home with an eye patch that was a great addition to his costume. Jaxon had a great time!

One of my favorite "boy" books is "Treasure Island". You need to read a chapter ahead and use a dictionary for the outdated terms and the ship terminology before you read a chapter to your kids but this is worth the effort. Be sure you get the original book written by Robert Louis Stevenson. A great lesson is learned when you consider how supposedly care free the pirates are and yet how truly unhappy their existence is.
They are reckless and wild with true consequence. The young boy in the story is fascinated with the pirates but in the end recognizes the lack of nobility in their character. It is a very exciting and fun read. Love you, Aunt Wendy
